YANGON (ANP) - Twee hooggeplaatste Amerikaanse functionarissen zijn dinsdag in Myanmar gearriveerd voor overleg met de militaire junta en oppositieleidster Aung San Suu Kyi. Washington probeert de relatie met het land te verbeteren.
De onderminister van Buitenlandse Zaken, Kurt Campbell, en zijn plaatsvervanger Scot Marciel zijn in de afgelegen hoofdstad Naypyidaw aangekomen, zei een zegsman van de Amerikaanse ambassade. Ze reizen woensdag door naar Yangon voor overleg met de oppositie, voegde hij eraan toe.
Myanmarese functionarissen lieten weten dat beide gezanten waarschijnlijk niet juntaleider Than Shwe zullen ontmoeten. De Amerikanen zouden overleggen met premier Thein Sein.
Campbell is de hoogste Amerikaanse functionaris die het Zuid-Aziatische land aandoet sinds het bezoek van de toenmalige Amerikaanse VN-ambassadeur Madeleine Albright in 1995.
