YANGON - Het huisarrest van de Myanmarese (Birmese) oppositieleidster Aung San Suu Kyi is zaterdag opgeheven. Dat heeft een regeringsfunctionaris in het Zuidoost-Aziatische land gezegd.
Een afgevaardigde van de autoriteiten ging het huis van Suu Kyi in Yangon binnen om haar de verklaring van vrijlating voor te lezen. ,,Ze is nu vrijgelaten'', aldus de functionaris. Kort daarna werd de oppositieleidster door een dokter bezocht en betrad haar advocaat het huis.
Nadat haar partij in 1990 de parlementsverkiezingen had gewonnen en het militaire regime de uitslag had geannuleerd, heeft de oppositieleidster vijftien jaar in gevangenschap of onder huisarrest doorgebracht. In 1991 werd haar de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede toegekend.
Het huisarrest van Suu Kyi liep zaterdag om 12.30 uur (Nederlandse tijd) af. Het was tot het laatste moment onduidelijk of de militaire junta Suu Kyi zou vrijlaten. Ondanks de onzekerheid hadden honderden aanhangers van de oppositieleidster zich bij haar huis verzameld.
