YANGON De menigte aanhangers van de Myanmarese oppositieleidster Aung San Suu Kyi, die zaterdag voor haar huis in Yangon bijeen is gekomen, reageerde uitzinnig op het nieuws dat haar huisarrest was opgeheven. De massa mensen juichte en begaf zich dichter naar de woning.
De politie had kort daarvoor de dranghekken weggehaald, wat het eerste officiële teken van de aanstaande vrijlating was. Meer dan duizend mensen hadden zich verzameld in de hoop dat ''The Lady'' zou worden vrijgelaten. Velen riepen leuzen en droegen T-shirts met teksten, zoals: ,,Wij steunen Aung San Suu Kyi''.
De politie heeft zich inmiddels teruggetrokken. Enige tijd later verscheen de oppositieleidster in de deuropening.
Voor veel mensen is Suu Kyi de belichaming van de hoop op verandering. In het verleden is zij ook al eens vrijgelaten, maar was dat altijd maar van korte duur.
